The inaugural Mayor’s Gala Christmas Concert, which takes place in the Watergate Theatre next month, was launched at City Hall last night.
All of Kilkenny’s living former mayors – 14 in total – were invited to attend the launch. St Vincent de Paul representatives were also invited to the council chamber.
Mayor Fitzgerald said he hoped that the launch would help to “highlight the importance of serving our own community.”
The concert, which has been organised on a voluntary basis in conjunction with the St Vincent de Paul charity, will feature ‘the cream of Kilkenny performers’. It is hoped that the event will raise much-needed funds to assist the Kilkenny branch of the charity.
The concert will be held on Friday, December 9 in Kilkenny’s Watergate Theatre. Tickets for the night will cost €15, with a €10 concession ticket available for OAPs.
In addition, the Mayor’s Christmas fund – formerly the Mayor’s Coal Fund – enters its 29th year this Christmas.
The fund goes towards coal and foodvouchers for some of Kilkenny’s neediest citizens during the winter. At this week’s meeting of the borough council, Mayor Fitzgerald urged Kilkenny’s citizens to support the Mayor’s Christmas Fund this December.
“People are facing a level of difficulty that hasn’t been seen in many years,” he said.
“Under the guidance of St Vincent de Paul, we can provide people with at least some level of comfort during the Christmas period.”
