Christmas market can be major boost for Kilkenny

Kilkenny’s Christmas market, which returns to the city this December, can become a nationally-recognised event and a significant stimulus for the local economy, according to Mayor David Fitzgerald.

Last year marked the inaugural Kilkenny Christmas market, and the event was widely hailed as a success by shoppers and traders. This year’s market is set to be even bigger and better, with more traders, events, and attractions planned.

Mayor David Fitzgerald said that the market was an incentive for Kilkenny citizens to shop locally this Christmas, but served to attract people from outside the county as well.

“This is also to act as a magnet for people to shop and spend in Kilkenny, and as an economic stimulus,” he said.

“It is intended to create an annual event that is recognised nationally. A number of festivals in our city have become a significant driver of our local economy, and it is intended that this would become part of that.”

A committee chaired by the Mayor, with representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and the traders, has been looking at various ways to improve the event for this year.

In addition to the trading stalls, this year’s market will feature a small food area, a Santa’s cabin, and a carousel. In addition, there is a variety of entertainment acts planned for specific times.

The Kilkenny tourist train service has also reportedly expressed a willingness to be involved in proceedings.

This year’s market will run for two weeks from Friday, December 9 until Friday, December 23. In total, there will be 12 trading days, in a format similar to last year – with as many as 25 traders operating on the Parade during the fortnight.

Trading space has been in high demand, with many of the stall areas already booked by eager traders.

The market will be launched on Friday evening, December 9, with the turning on of the Christmas lights on the Parade.
