As Irish troops once again depart for Lebanon, the Irish Lebanese Cultural Foundation will celebrate its 10-year anniversary in Kilkenny tomorrow, with a day of musical, cultural and intellectual arts.
The event begins at 2pm on Saturday in Kilkenny’s Ormonde Hotel, with the raising of the Lebanese flag, and a welcome speech from Mayor of Kilkenny David Fitzgerald.
The day will feature a variety of showpieces and entertainment, including a Lebanese photo exhibition, fashion show, music, film, literature, history and Lebanese food and wines. Performers include Irish songwriter Thom Moore, musician Tamem Michael and guest speakers.
The evening ends with a bang at 7.30pm, with a traditional debkah dance. Entrance to the event is free.
In November 2001, as the last Irish peacekeeping troops returned from Lebanon after 23 years, the Irish Lebanese Cultural Foundation (ILCF ) was established – with the goal of continuing and fostering the ties between Lebanon and Ireland.
A long record of activities and cultural events have taken place since its foundation.
The ILCF oversaw the planting of cedar trees in memory of the 47 soldiers who died in Lebanon, and organised a ‘Heroes’ Welcome’ for ex-servicemen during St Patrick’s day celebrations in Beirut in 2005. The organisation even acquired Lebanese Army Medals of Appreciation, which were distributed to veterans of the Irish UN Battalions.
Entrance to the event tomorrow (Saturday ) is free of charge.
