'Waking the feminists’ in the mother tongue

DÚN NA mBan Trí Thine at An Taibhdhearc for GIAF 2017

DÚN NA mBan Trí Thine - The Fairy Fort Is On Fire - a modern play about motherhood and magic with a predominantly female cast and crew, comes to An Taibhdhearc for next month's Galway International Arts Festival.

Dún na mBan Trí Thine, by Eilís Ní Dhuibhne, and starring Linda Bhreathnach, (award-winning filmmaker, Adulting ), Máire Ní Mháille, Tara Breathnach, (A Nightingale Calling ), Yvonne Laife, and Catherine Denning, runs from July 13 to 22 at 8pm. Set design is by Tríona Lillis with costumes by Chérie White (designer with Macnas ). The stage manager is Rae Penelope Visser (Fíbín ).

Léiní struggles as a wife, as mother of young children, and her desire to be an artist. On top of that, witches from Dún na mBan haunt her and threaten to invade her house. Léini begins to crack up. Is she losing her mind? Or will she give in to the witches and go over to Dún na mBan?

Writer Éilís Ní Dhuibhne, nominated for the Orange Prize for Fiction, (“A compelling voice in anyone’s language” The Irish Times ), has worked closely with the directors to create a revised version of the play which was first staged in the Peacock in 1995. The show is directed by Anne McCabe and Marianne Kennedy, who are both #MAMs, (Mother Artist Makers ), and supporters of the #waking the feminists’ movement.

"There is a constant balancing act required of women in the arts to manage our creative lives with our day-to-day responsibilities; it’s a universal story that parents everywhere can relate to," says Anne McCabe.

The play is as Gaeilge with English-language surtitles. There will be previews from July 13 to 15 at 8pm with a matinee on July 22 at 3pm. There is no show on July 16. For tickets see www.giaf.ie and the festival box office on Forster Street. #GIAF17
