Winning goal caps memorable week for Thompson

Seventeen-year-old Aoife Thompson was the hero on Sunday when her late goal helped propel Galway Women’s FC to their first win of the season, overcoming Kilkenny 2-1.

It was a busy week for Thompson, who had made her international debut a week previous, when along with four Galway WFC teammates, she represented Ireland in the UEFA European Women’s U19 Elite Round against Turkey.

Kilkenny United WFC went ahead against the run of play from an unstoppable Carla McManus free kick at the edge of the box. However Galway equalised through Aislinn Meaney, who cut in from the right wing and beat the keeper at the near post.

Galway piled on the pressure in the second half. Sadhbh Doyle had the ball in the net twice, but on both occasions the goals were ruled out for offside. Carlie Schecht, Thompson and Lisa Casserly all should have added to Galway's tally and it looked like Galway were going to rue their numerous missed chances before Thompson popped up with a clinical finish in the 81st minute.

Galway are in action again this weekend at home against Wexford Youths Women at 6pm in Eamonn Deacy Park. The visit of the league champions is sure to draw a large crowd with Galway manager Billy Clery hopeful his side will be more clinical with their chances to put back-to-back wins together.
