Celebrations are continuing in Salthill after its brand The Village Salthill won top prize at the national Irish Public Bodies Pride of Place Awards. It was successful in the category of Urban Neighbourhoods with a population of more than 2,000.

The Village Salthill is a body of concerned business people and stakeholders in Salthill who have been working toward the regeneration and upgrade of the Salthill area for the last number of years.

Working closely with the City Council the group are behind the development of a range of initiatives aimed at revitalising the Salthill area.

Speaking at the awards Mayor Pearce Flannery said it is gratifying to see that such great work is recognised on a national stage.

“I am particularly pleased to be here tonight but I am conscious that the real winners are those who meet every Thursday morning of the year working and planning to make The Viallage in Salthill a better experience for all, both visitors and tourists alike.

“I have attended many of these meetings and am delighted that the efforts as a group of powerful unsung heroes are recognised in such a public and positive way.”

“This award is indicative of the great work that is taking place not just in Salthill but across the city in general. Groups such as The Village Salthill give freely of their time and effort to make our community and its infrastructure a better place for us all. I am delighted to have been involved with such a great group and particularly pleased to receive the award on their behalf. Initiatives and projectsacross Salthill and along the promenade are now coming to fruition and it is great to see that those outside of our community recognise the work and progress for what it is.” added Mayor Pearce Flannery.

Mayor Flannery also congratulated “Let’s Get Galway Growing” who were the runner up on the Community Environmental Initiatives category while Comhairle na nOg Galway won the top prize in the Community Based Youth Initiative category.
