Galway for Uncle Sam

The Galway county council has backed a motion that could potentially see the All-Ireland winning senior and minor hurling teams travel to the The White House for St Patrick's Day next year.

The proposal, tabled by Loughrea area councillor Michael Fahy, asked county CEO Kevin Kelly to write to the Irish ambassador to the USA requesting both victorious hurling teams to be invited to the White House on March 17.

Cllr Fahy, who tabled the motion at last month's council meeting as well, said; "This is probably the greatest achievement in the history of Galway GAA. I did not pull this proposal last month as stroke to get in a paper. There are thousands of undocumented Irish in America and having the two All-Ireland winning teams would show that we still remember them."

Sinn Féin councillor Dermot Connolly, who seconded Cllr Fahy's motion, said; "As someone who hurled in America, I support Cllr Fahy's proposal but I am not sure if they would wish to go."
