Sol y Luna Language School in Galway has been serving students’ needs for the past number of years and the testimonials from both parents and students speak for how successful it is.
Spanish is the third most spoken language worldwide, and is gathering momentum in its popularity and importance as a foreign language option in secondary education. Past students have also enrolled with a view to gaining competence in practical Spanish skills for foreign holidays.
As with any language at Leaving Certificate level, the oral examination is paramount in achieving maximum grades. Sol y Luna Language School has extensive experience in preparing students for Leaving Cert exams through Departmental oral exam preparation, mock oral interviews, weekend preparation courses, and one-to-one tailored tuition which caters for the specific needs of the students.
“My son was struggling with Spanish," said the parent of a Sol y Luna student. "Esther really helped him with all aspects of learning, not just Spanish, from helping him with organising his notes and exam techniques. He went from not enjoying Spanish to really liking it in a few short months. Esther is a very good teacher, was so helpful and very encouraging, and most of all approachable and fun. I would definitely recommend her to anyone looking to improve their Spanish.”
Children’s ability to learn languages is increased by early exposure to a second language. Children can start as early as five years of age and enjoy the social aspect of learning a new language, while increasing their self-confidence and language skills. New resources added to the courses every year help maintain the students' interest and motivation.
“I find Esther’s teaching approach to be very effective," said one of Sol y Luna's adult learners. "For me, key teaching ingredients that have contributed to my progress to date include the focus on conversation in a relaxed setting, structured teaching of basic grammar, and opportunities to explore cultural issues. The small class group and the teacher’s encouraging but non-pressurising approach mean that all members of the class get lots of speaking practice. As an adult learner, I can recommend this language school to anyone wishing to learn Spanish.”
Part of the programme includes an optional social timetable where the group meets to practice in a more informal setting. Those who engage in this extracurricular option find it very rewarding and good fun.
It is never too late to learn a new language. New features for the 2017-2018 programme include an open day in Athenry and in the Headford Road Centre on September 16, where parents and students have an opportunity to discuss the individual educational needs of students.
Immersion Saturday sessions for primary school children will be available on October 28 (Halloween theme ), December 9 (Christmas theme ) and various other dates throughout the year. This sessions will be four hours long and will include a wide range of activities.
A free introductory exam preparation class for the Leaving and Junior Cert exam will take place on August 23 2018. This will focus on practical information on marking schemes, study skills, and planning and general pointers towards useful resources. After the session the students will have an opportunity to join the programme of their choice. Limited spaces are available.
Sol y Luna has also introduced a new component whereby enrolled students will have an opportunity to have alternate conversations in Spanish and English with other language students. This will further promote their conversational skills. This module is free of charge for students.
