The Burning Hell to play Róisín Dubh

Hopeful songs about the apocalypse from Canadian folk trio

DESPITE THEIR name, The Burning Hell's music is so good, "even Jesus is going to enjoy it once He finally gets here," according the BBC's Tom Robinson - and Galway can see why this weekend.

Canadian folk trio, The Burning Hell, play upstairs in the Róisín Dubh on Thursday September 21 at 9pm. They are currently touring to promote their new album, Revival Beach, which will be released on September 29.

The band - Ariel Sharratt (drums, bass clarinet ), Darren Browne (bass/bouzouki ), and Mathias Kom (guitars ) - range from jangly garage rock to 50s ballads, and Greek-tinged instrumentals, to waltzes, all while keeping Kom's storytelling as the central focus. Indeed Uncut noted: "Kom has a dry wit and sharp eye that elevate indie-rock tunes into offbeat storytelling treats." The Digital Fix praised Kom's "hyper-literate, warm, and witty stories...Kom’s rapid fire lyrics contain deep emotional depth and wide narrative breadth while keeping a common touch.“

Revival Beach deals with the current obsession with apocalyptical scenariuous, whether in our culture, such as in zombie or disaster movies; or on our newsfeeds, such as North Korea, Trump, ISIS, and global warming. It is not a grim record. It suggests that, despite how badly humanity has messed things up, there might still be something worth redeeming in us.

Support is from My Fellow Sponges side-project, The Curley Organ.
