Autumn courses at Galway Arts Centre

Galway Arts Centre, 47 Dominick Street, is now enrolling participants for upcoming autumn workshops. Beginning in September, GAC is offering evening and daytime classes in writing, painting, photography, theatre, and more.

Poetry workshops by Kevin Higgins run every Tuesday and Friday. They are open to complete beginners as well as those who have been writing for some time. There is also an advanced poetry workshop on Thursday afternoons, suitable for those who have participated in poetry workshops before or have had poems published in magazines.

Creative writing by Susan Millar DuMars is a Monday daytime class for all those beginners and continuing creative writing students out there.

Painting by artist and art historian Stephan Roche will run each Thursday evening for all adults, beginners or advanced, interested in painting. Each week there will be a focus on a different genre (still-life, landscape, portraiture, etc, ) with short slide-shows introducing various artists’ ways of working within these categories throughout art history. Classes are casual and fun, with both group and one-on-one learning and tuition. Some materials will be provided, and a list of suggested additional painting tools and mediums will be provided upon booking.

Digital photography for beginners by artist Louise Manifold is a 10 week evening course for adults. The course is intended to provide a general introduction to photography and is suitable for both absolute beginners and people with a little basic photographic knowledge wishing to develop their potential as photographers.

The popular Ad Hoc Choir returns, with Kate Duignan guiding participants through the world of singing every Thursday evening.

Galway Youth Theatre by Andrew Flynn is offering a theatre training programme for young people (aged 14 to 18 ) commencing in late September. Various training in performance disciplines will be held at weekend workshops from 11am to 1pm. For those interested in applying for the course membership forms can be sent out or collected from Galway Arts Centre.

Andrew Flynn is also offering a Monday evening drama class which is part of community programme and is suitable for anyone aged over 18 years. This class in numbers dependent.

New to Galway Arts Centre is introduction to Super 8 animation. This six week course will introduce the participants to Super 8 animation using stop-motion techniques as well as direct animation by drawing straight onto the film strip. The course is taught by visual artist Cecilia Danell, who works with Super 8 film in her art practice, most recently as part of her solo exhibition at the Galway Arts Centre earlier this year where she presented the film Tonight at the Magic Theatre which was shot on Super 8 and contained stop-motion animated elements.

All classes are led by professional and experienced tutors. Tutors working with under 18s are Garda vetted and have participated in child protection training.
