Public meeting on rising car insurance costs

A public meeting on the rising cost of car insurance, organised by People Before Profit Galway, will be held at 8pm this evening in the Western Hotel on Prospect Hill.

Ireland has high car insurance premiums. Insurance companies claim the price hikes are caused by the rising costs of claims following car accidents. However, Garda figures show there has been a drop in accidents, with the costs of collisions having dropped by 44 per cent between 2007 and 2012.

People Before Profit Galway organiser Gary Hussey said: “The real cause of the rip-off is greed for more profit. Many insurance companies gambled on financial speculation and lost after the financial crisis of 2008. They want us to pay higher insurance to restore their profits.”

All are welcome to the meeting to hear plans and ideas for a public, not-for-profit insurance company.
