Opportunities abound at St Mary’s College

St Mary’s College will hold an open evening this evening October 6 at 6.30pm. All prospective students and their parents are welcome to attend; the evening promises to be a showcase of what St Mary’s College has to offer, and what sets it apart from any other school in the city.

St Mary’s offers a strong curriculum affording students the opportunity to study at the highest levels across an array of subject areas. The impressive facilities at St Mary’s are unrivalled in Galway city — the school is set on some 40 acres of beautifully maintained surroundings, recently lauded by An Taisce as one of the best kept grounds in Galway city. There are Gaelic and soccer pitches, basketball and tennis courts, fitness suite, weights room, a nationally recognised cross-country course, indoor and outdoor handball courts, as well as two sports halls.

St Mary’s College also offers many extracurricular activities including debating, chess, computer programming, Young Scientist, and choir. In addition, students can spend lunchtimes playing board games, chatting in the spacious canteen, and participating in myriad extracurricular activities. The fundamental aspiration for students is that they will excel academically in St Mary’s; this is copperfastened by after school study Monday to Friday.

The college is a centre of excellence for music in Galway and is home to Music for Galway, Galway Music Centre, Galway Youth Orchestra, Maoin Cheoil na Gaillimhe, and Galway Music Residency. Furthermore, well established educational enterprises such as Euro Languages, Stagecoach, and Cúrsa Gramco have based themselves in the college because of the exceptional facilities on offer.

St Mary’s has facilitated the learning and development of students for more than 100 years; past pupils have recognised that the college enabled them to succeed academically and to achieve their potential in sport. The current student body are very proud to be part of the St Mary’s tradition.

Students have an excellent rapport with teachers and proof of this can be seen at the open evening where students and teachers work alongside one another to invite the next generation to join an exceptional group that is St Mary’s. The staff at St Mary’s are experienced and dedicated — many of them are also examiners for Junior and Leaving Certificate examinations.

Teachers from all disciplines will be available to speak with any prospective students; boys going to secondary school in 2017 and beyond are welcome to attend.

St Mary's College annual festival of hurling for the Centenary Cup takes place in the college grounds this Saturday October 8 for local under 10 hurling clubs from 9.30am. All visitors welcome to go along and support their local club.
