Contract for Aran Island air services extended

Air services to the Aran Islands are set to continue following approval for the extension of the current contract by the Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs and Natural Resources, Seán Kyne.

Minister Kyne, who is also Fine Gael TD for Galway West, granted approval following the provision of advice by the Attorney General. The original public service obligation contract for the Aran Islands air service had been due to expire at the end of this month.

He said the contract was extended “as this is the best way of ensuring continuity of this important service”. He added that the extension also ensures applications for the new contract “can be thoroughly evaluated and examined” by the Office of Government Procurement without resulting in a gap in service. The process is expecxted to be concluded in the coming weeks.
