Galway Rape Crisis Centre looking for volunteers

Galway Rape Crisis Centre is recruiting female support workers to help survivors of sexual abuse and rape.

The workers would be based in the centre's Sexual Assault Treatment Unit, which opened in 2009 and offers coordinated multidisciplinary services by gardai, health professionals and GRCC to people in the immediate aftermath of a sexual assault or rape. GRCC provides vital psychological support to the SATU unit’s clients.

GRCC will provide staff with comprehensive training over six weekends and two evening sessions and join a team of volunteers who receive support and supervision to ensure best practise standards.

The centre has been supporting survivors of sexual abuse and rape since 1984, and after 20 years campaigning, Galway became the location of one of the country’s few Sexual Assault Treatment Units.

The centre offers a range of services to its clients that include short and long term counselling, court accompaniment, group sessions, and advocacy services.

Services to the wider community include an education and prevention programme delivered to secondary schools and third level colleges, as well as disclosure trainings for anyone who, in a professional or volunteering capacity, is likely to receive disclosures of sexual violence or abuse.
