Galway WFC look to build on opening day win

Galway Women's FC host their first home fixture of the new season in Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday evening (7pm ), and are urging all football supporters to support them in their quest for honours.

Having strengthened the squad over the summer, GWFC are hoping to challenge for honours this season and they enjoyed the best possible start in last Sunday's season opener, claiming a 6-0 victory over Kilkenny United.

In the opening game of the 2016 Continental Tyres Women's National League, Galway put six past Kilkenny United without reply, four in the second half.

Don O'Riordan's side went ahead just before the half hour mark after a deflected shot from 16-year-old debutante Sadhbh Doyle was finished from close range by Ellerose O’Flaherty. On 36 minutes the roles were reversed with O’Flaherty getting on to a Lynsey McKey cross and finding Doyle who tapped in to leave Galway two up at the break.

The third goal came in the 13th minute of the second half when Méabh De Búrca converted a controversial penalty, but there was no doubt which side was superior as the half continued.

On 74 minutes, from a short corner, McKey’s cross was met by a Lucy Hannon half-volley to the roof of the net for the fourth goal of the game, and just four minutes later, again from a McKey corner, another Galway debutante, former Castlebar Celtic star Yvonne Hedigan, pressurised the Kilkenny defence to find the net. The victory was wrapped up in the 89th minute when once again a McKey corner did the damage, and was finished by a bullet Hedigan header.

Now Galway WFC now look forward with confidence to the visit of Cork City, who lost 0-3 to Shelbourne in their opening fixture.
