Unbeaten Galway advance to camogie semi-finals

Following their impressive 1-12 to 0-10 win last weekend over Kilkenny, Galway senior camogie squad under the guidance of Ollie Bergin will proceed directly to the Liberty Insurance Senior Camogie championship semi-finals.

Current All-Ireland champions Cork, the other group winners, also qualified directly for the last four, which will be broadcast live on RTÉ One on Saturday, August 13 from Nowlan Park.

In a repeat of the league final which was won by Kilkenny, it was Galway who showed the greater stamina to hit five consecutive points to win the game by that same margin last weekend.

The Cats had led by 0-4 to 0-3 at half time with Niamh McGrath notching two frees for Galway.

Ailish O’Reilly goaled eight minutes into the second half and Niamh Kilkenny followed that score up with a white flag to give some badly needed impetus to the side.

Kilkenny responded with three points to bring the sides level again, but as the game opened up, it was Galway who were in no mood to be beaten, and with five consecutive points, they came down the home straight to deservedly book their place in the semi-finals.

The Intermediate team face Cork this weekend in St Brendan's Park, Loughrea (2.30pm ).

Galway senior camogie players are through to the semi-finals of the Liberty Insurance Senior Camogie Championship after a strong second-half showing against Kilkenny.

In a repeat of this year's league final which Kilkenny won, Galway produced a late rally to win by 1-12 to 0-10, topping group two and joining group one winners and holders Cork in the semi-finals.

Kilkenny had led by the minimum 0-4 to 0-3 after the opening period with Niamh McGrath slotting two frees for Galway. However Ailish O'Reilly scored a well-taken goal eight minutes into the second half, and when Niamh Kilkenny followed with a point, the momentum was with Galway.

Kilkenny refused to give in. Three points brought them level, but Galway grabbed the initiative with five points on the trot to see off Kilkenny and remain unbeaten in this season's championships.

This weekend camogie action turns to the intermediate championship where Galway will face Cork at St Brendan’s Park, Loughrea (2.30pm ).

Galway, having only a win over Down in their first three matches, will face a tough task against Cork who are currently second in group two behind Meath on score difference.
