Cathy Killeen wins Volunteer of the Year Mayoral Award

Cathy Killeen won the Galway City Council Volunteer of the Year award, at the 13th Annual Mayor’s Awards for Galway City, for her long involvement with the Castlegar/Menlo Foróige club.

Ms Killeen was among a number of recipients at the Mayoral awards, which took place on Tuesday night in the Radisson Blu Hotel in front of an audience of more than 300 people. The Mayor of Galway Frank Fahy presented each of the winners with a Galway Crystal trophy and a cheque for €500.

The recipients in each of the categories were Seán Stafford (Arts, Culture, Heritage & Cúrsaí Gaeilge Award ) for his many voluntary to An Taibhdhearc; Tony McDonagh (Residents’ & Local Areas Award ) for looking after the grounds of Forthill Cemetery; Marian Maloney Nolan (Community Service & Social Inclusion ) for her commitment to ensuring that people with disabilities have an opportunity to live an independent and active life.

Violet Gavin (Older Volunteer of the Year ) for her commitment to the Positive Mental Health Foundation initiative in Galway secondary schools; Samuel Lukombo Sambu (Sports Volunteer of the Year Award ) for his voluntary activity with the Galway Football Association; John O’Toole (Children and Youth Award ) for working with Scouting Ireland in Galway over a period of 50 years; Ginalee Healy (Young Volunteer of the Year ) in recognition of her voluntary fundraising activities for a number of groups within Galway.

More than 100 individuals and groups were also presented with certificates from the Mayor in recognition of their voluntary activity in community life in the city.
