Meehan brothers on Laochra Gael

The Laochra Gael series is one of the most popular and enjoyable GAA programmes on TG4, and it comes to an end this Sunday with the final programme featuring the Meehan brothers from the Caltra GAA Club.

The six Meehan brothers from the Tycooly heartland of Caltra in East Galway are one of the most famous football families in the history of the GAA. Their All-Ireland club success in 2004 was a hugely novel and heart-warming All-Ireland club success.

That fabulous All-Ireland club victory was a real once-off, and having followed the club's one and only Galway senior county title, shows how remarkable and special that journey was for the club and its supporters.

Seamus, Enda, Noel, Michael, Tomás and Declan Meehan were all on that Caltra team that famously defeated a star-studded Kerry side, An Gaeltacht, in that All-Ireland final on St Patricks Day.

Declan and Tomás also won two All-Ireland medals with Galway in 1998 and in 2001, and Hogan Cup medals with St Jarlath's College in 1994.

Younger brother Michael emulated their success with SJC in 2002 and also went on to win two All-Ireland under 21 medals with Galway and represented both Galway and Ireland at the highest level before his career was cut short with ankle injuries.

Sister Mairead (RIP ), was also a very accomplished camogie player.

The Laochra Gael programme featuring the Meehan brothers will be broadcast on TG4 this Sunday evening (5.55pm ) with a repeat showing on Monday evening at 8pm.

Viewers will hear their stories and their memories of that fairytale season along with other contributions from former Galway, Mayo and Leitrim manager John O’Mahony, current Galway football manager Kevin Walsh, and All-Ireland winning captain with Kerry and former Gaeltacht player, and Seo Spóirt presenter Dara Ó Cinnéide.

It promises to be a programme well worth watching for all Galway GAA supporters, and sports fan everywhere.
