McDonnell calls on council to maintain Mervue playground

The playground in Mervue is suffering from vandalism and a lack of maintenance and is becoming a magnet for anti-social behaviour. It’s time the Galway City Council stepped in and sorted it out.

This is the view of Independent Cllr Declan McDonnell, who is calling on City Hall to maintain the playground in Mervue to ensure its continued availability for use by local children.

“The playground in Mervue was a gift from the board of St Columba’s Credit Union to the local community,” he said, “and while the finest of equipment was provided, Galway City Council does not maintain this facility.”

Cllr McDonnell said the council must keep the area properly maintained, litter free, and liaise with the community gardaí for the area in order to curb the anti-social behaviour. He also asked the council’s parks section to ensure this playground is used by children and not teenagers.

“Parents will not continue to bring their children to this site, unless it is kept clean and properly maintained,” he said. “I have also requested that the community gardaí remain in the community at peak times.”
