St Nicholas' among historic Galway buildings to benefit from new investment

St Nicholas Collegiate Church is one of a number of historic buildings, across Galway city and county, set to benefit from Government funding of €117,000 under the built heritage investment scheme.

The funding will enable the conservation and repair of a wide range of properties in Galway including residential homes, townhouses, railway stations, churches, country houses and other heritage buildings. The scheme will leverage additional investment through private funds.

Funding of €67,000 is being invested in six heritage buildings in the city, including St Nicholas, with the money going towards the repair and maintenance of window glass and leadwork. In the county, funding of €50,000 will enable works on Oranmore Castle, Bookeen Hall in Athenry, Bunatubber in Corrandulla, as well as several buildings in Connemara, including the St Thomas Church at Moyard Bridge, Cashel House, Christchurch in Clifden, and Kilcummin Church, Oughterard.

The funding has been welcomed by Fine Gael Galway West TD Seán Kyne, chair of the Fine Gael Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Committee. “With this funding we are preserving our built heritage for future generations while also boosting the attractiveness of Galway city and County as a tourist destination," he said. He added that the investment would also "boost employment in specialised sectors in Galway".
