Cancer survivor holds charity event to remember Bowie

A special night to commemorate the passing this week of rock legend David Bowie will take place this Saturday, January 16 in The Loft at Seven Bar on Bridge Street.

The hosts for the evening are Darren McMahon, a recent cancer survivor himself and local entrepreneur Bruce Henry who together started “The VHS Club” last August. The VHS Club is a regular monthly night hosted by the duo that shows pop culture movies from the VHS era and is often held on the last Wednesday of every month upstairs in The Loft.

Local Galway resident Darren McMahon, formally of Ennis, Co. Clare is no stranger to battling the disease and will celebrate being five years cancer free this May. Diagnosed with hodgkins lymphoma in December 2010, Darren began his chemotherapy treatment on Christmas eve believing the sooner he started, the sooner he’d be finished. In May of 2011, the treating oncology doctor at Limerick University Hospital gave Darren the good news that he was officially in remission.

“Fighting cancer was a real eye opening experience and one that has changed my life immeasurably. I’ve always been a big fan of David Bowie and when we got the news on Monday that he had passed away after his own battle with cancer, Bruce and I knew we had to throw a special night in his honour” said McMahon.

Co-producing the event on Saturday alongside McMahon is local business man Bruce Henry who is best known for his murder mystery entertainment company, Murder on the Menu which was started in Galway in the summer of 2013.

“I’m so excited to be working on this exciting night with Darren. I think his story of beating cancer is truly one of inspiration and the fact that we get to pay tribute to such a legend like David Bowie is just an added bonus” said Mr Henry.

The evening will begin with a screening of Labyrinth, the movie at 8pm followed by a “REBEL REBEL” after party from 11pm until late. Admission is €5 and €8 after 11pm with proceeds going to the Irish Cancer Society. All attendees are encouraged to dress in their favourite David Bowie attire/make-up.
