The century of Irish food to be theme of Galway Food Festival

The 5th annual Galway Food Festival will take place over the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend from the 24th – 28th March 2016. The theme for this year’s exciting, innovative and delectable food programme is exploring 100 years of Irish Food.

The committee of the Galway Food Festival, led by incoming chairperson and Galway Food Festival Director, JP Mc Mahon of the award winning Aniar, Cava and Eat Galway restaurants and eateries, invites all interested restaurants, food outlets, food producers and suppliers to the Galway hospitality trade to an information meeting at 6pm on Wednesday 13th January next at the Kitchen Café at Galway City Museum.

Last year’s Galway Food Festival experienced a 10 per cent increase in visitor numbers with an estimated 78,000 people attending events including the festival food village at Spanish Arch; the Galway, Moycullen and Woodquay Country Markets and a packed programme of talks, tours, tastings, demonstrations and workshops. Over 100 restaurants, food outlets and food producers from across the city and county were involved. Admission to most events was free, and all attracted capacity audiences, with many being over-subscribed.

This year’s festival will see the return of all of the above, along with an increased programme of new and exciting food events centred around the theme of 100 years of Irish Food to coincide with Ireland’s centenary celebrations.

Draft plans for 2016 include an extended food trail, the ever popular cookery demonstrations will take place at the Druid Theatre and an expansion of the eclectic programme of Food Tours including trips to the Aran Islands, trips to the Burren and visits to farms, producer’s outlets and craft brewers are also well underway. There will again be lots of in-house events including exciting pop ups, cocktail classes, wine and whiskey tastings and a comprehensive schedule of talks on a range of topical issues in the food and drinks industry. Plans are also being made to host events at a number of surprise locations throughout Galway City and County.

The Festival organisers anticipate the meeting will last no more than 60 minutes. The 2016 Galway Food Festival organisers are keen to build on Galway’s growing reputation as the food capital of the Wild Atlantic Way through the extended involvement of food producers, suppliers and outlets located along the Western Seaboard in the festival’s markets and events programme.

Therefore all restaurants, food producers, and suppliers interested in participating in the 2016 Galway Food Festival are invited to come along to the meeting or, if unable to attend, should contact the festival at [email protected] as soon as possible.
