Following a meeting on Tuesday afternoon. Galway County Council and the HSE, Irish Water lifted the boil water notice on the Ballinasloe Public Water Supply Scheme affecting approximately 10,000 Irish Water customers. All affected by the notice can now resume normal use of the water supply for drinking, food preparation and brushing teeth.
The Boil Water Notice for Ballinasloe was imposed on the supply by the HSE, as a precautionary measure, on December 6 following a rise in water levels of the river Suck, as a result of Storm Desmond, which affected the normal operations of the water treatment plant in Ballinasloe.
Irish Water, in partnership with Galway County Council, immediately mobilised crews to deal with the issues at the plant and ensure it returned to being fully operational as soon as possible. The early stages of the emergency response involved crews pumping 230,000 litres of water per hour out of the treatment plant.
Once the flooding at the plant was under control, water quality testing was carried out on the treated water to ensure no contamination had occurred. The HSE has now confirmed that the Ballinasloe public water supply is now safe for human consumption and as a result has lifted the Boil Water Notice.
Irish Water is currently in the process of alerting residents affected by the Boil Water Notice that it is no longer in place and normal use of water can begin immediately.
