Galway Indian Community to hold major Diwali celebration

Diwali, the festival of lights, and an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in every autumn in India, will be marked by the city’s Indian community this month with a major, celebratory, event, to which all Galway is invited.

Dwiali is held in the honour of Lakshmi, goddess of wealth and prosperity. On this day oil diyas (clay lamps ) are lit around the house, and it is from this Diwali, also known as Deepawali in some parts of India, takes its name as the term means ‘rows of lamps’. The festival spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair.

The Galway Indian Community will hold its ninth Diwali celebration on Saturday November 21, from 5pm, at the Presentation Primary School, Newcastle Road from 5pm. There will be food, a cultural programme, games, prizes to won and a ‘dance–till-you-drop’ Bollywood style disco.

The GIC said about event: “We warmly invite the people of Galway to reflect and celebrate and join us to catch up with the old friends and make new ones. Together we will reverently light the diyas, fondly remember past times and create shinning new memories to sustain us through the long winter ahead.”
