Iconic African freedom fighter travels west to champion gender equality

Graça Machel, a one-time freedom fighter in Mozambique turned human rights and equality activist will this month visit the West of Ireland.  Together with her husband, civil liberties icon Nelson Mandela, Machel was instrumental in founding The Elders and has made women’s rights a lifelong cause.

Machel will join fellow member of The Elders, former President of Ireland Mary Robinson to discuss women’s rights and the issues challenging equality in our world. The Second Annual International Human Rights Lecture, it will take place at 3pm on Saturday, 28th November in St Muredach’s Cathedral, Ballina, Co. Mayo. This is the signature annual event of The Mary Robinson Centre, Ireland’s first Presidential Library.

Ms Machel’s guest lecture at The Mary Robinson Centre will address equality and justice for all in our society, looking at issues in today’s world that adversely affect women and children, including climate change, political and social unrest and the current migrant crisis.

The lecture will be followed by a discussion with Graça Machel and Mary Robinson facilitated by journalist Olivia O’Leary.  This event offers a rare opportunity to hear first hand from a truly global leader and to celebrate equality and diversity in our world.
