Galway WFC maintain winning momentum

Galway WFC grabbed a second successive win made in the Continental Tyres WNL with a comprehensive 5-0 win over Castlebar Celtic on Saturday evening in Eamonn Deacy Park.

All goals were scored in the second half despite Galway’s domination of both territory and possession in the opening period.

However that lack a killer instinct in front of goal changed after the interval when after only three minutes Aislinn Meaney opened the scoring for Galway when the ball broke to her in the box and she calmly slotted home.  Nine minutes later she doubled Galway’s lead after referee Trevor Conlon played advantage when Savannah McCarthy was fouled.  From the ball breaking, Lisa Casserly played it to winger Meaney, who cut inside her marker and fired low this time with her left.

On 63 minutes McCarthy rose highest in the six yard box to head home a Lynsey McKey corner, and five minutes later McKey put the game beyond doubt when she added a fourth,  getting on the end of a Casserly cross.  In the final minute McKey bagged her second when she converted a spot kick after McCarthy was taken down in the box.

This weekend all eyes will be on the Aviva stadium with Wexford Youths taking on Shelbourne in the Continental Tyres Women’s FAI Cup final.  Then Galway are back in action on Sunday week when they travel to Buckley Park to take on newcomers Kilkenny United.

Galway WFC: Hughes, Fox, Maloney, Cormican, Carter (Hartley 75 ), Casserly (Walsh 69 ), McCarthy, McKey, Meaney (Kelleher 69 mins ), De Búrca, Byrne.
