Information evening on prostate cancer to be held in city

An information evening on prostate cancer will be held in Menlo Park Hotel on Thursday November 12.

The event is free to attend and is open to men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and also theiur partners. It will be addressed by Rachael Dalton and Fionnuala Creighton. Rachael is a clinical nurse specialist in prostate cancer survivorship who provides care, advise, support and education for patients with prostate cancer.  Fionnuala Creighton is a nurse working in the Daffodil Centre in UHG providing cancer information and support for people affected by cancer. The Daffodil Centre is a drop in service based in the main foyer of UHG.

The information evening is aimed at men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and are going through treatment and also men who have been diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer in the past. The purpose of the evening is to help people and their families understand why there are different treatment options for prostate cancer and to understand the effects of those treatments. There will be a number of healthcare professionals speaking about various types of treatments, the effects of these treatments (short and long term ) and they will also speak about what can be done to deal with these problems.

Topics that will be covered that evening include surgery for prostate cancer, radiotherapy for prostate cancer, incontinence, erectile dysfunction and psychological care. People will have an opportunity to ask questions of the health professionals and as some questions are of a very personal and sensitive nature, people will have an opportunity to write down questions and place them in a box on their way in (they won’t have to put any identifying details on the question ).

Rachael will then pose the question  to the relevant healthcare professional. This means people do not have to ask a question of a personal nature in front of the audience. The Prostate Cancer Information evening is open to men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and their partners. Family and friends are also welcome to attend.

The event is being held in the Menlo Park Hotel, Terryland, Headford Road, Galway on Thursday 12th November from 6.30pm until 9.30pm. Refreshments will be provided.People can book to come to the event by contacting Rachael via email on [email protected] or Fionnuala via phone (091 )893489.
