Leading sitar player gives Galway concert

WORLD RENOWNED sitar player Surajit Das, accompanied by tabla player Subrata Paul, will give a concert of Indian classical music at the Nun's Island Theatre on Wednesday September 16 at 8pm.

According to the Vedas, the Indian manuscripts which collect the oldest Hindu literature and sacred writing, Gandharva Veda Music, neutralises stress, and promotes harmony, peace, and balance in the listener and the environment. The music has many different sections called Ragas. Every Raga has a different balancing influence on the time/part of the day and seasons of the year. All ragas are built up by rules and notes which are closely connected with the rhythms of nature.

Surajit Das received his first sitar lesson from his aunt at the age of nine and in 1986 obtained his masters degree in Indian Classical Music from the Prayag Sangit Samiti University in Allahabad, India. Subrata Paul appears regularly on radio and TV in India and Germany. He work has featured in numerous films and albums.
