Galway Potters’ Market taking place this weekend

From award winning potters to newly qualified ceramicists, some of the variety and virtuosity of contemporary Irish studio pottery will be on display for two days in Galway during the first week of the Arts Festival.

For the fifth year running, the Galway Potters’ Market takes place on the Spanish parade this coming Friday and Saturday, July 17 and 18. Potters’ markets are familiar to many from their travels abroad, but this is the only market of its kind in Ireland and offers the possibility of showing the talents and skills of these crafts people to the wider public.

Twenty one potters and ceramic artists from all over Ireland will display their work on the banks of the Corrib beside the Spanish Arch. Potters and ceramicists working in stoneware, earthenware and porcelain will be showing functional and non functional wares. There will be supervised clay workshops throughout the event where the public will be invited to rekindle their creative spark and play with clay. For many a new experience, for others a familiar pleasure, this has always been a particular favourite with children of all ages who have come upon past markets.

Last year’s market was a huge success and with the largest participation yet this year promises to be a memorable event. So go along to the Galway Potters’ Market and talk, browse, shop, and play on the Spanish Parade this weekend.
