Contracts signed to build new Garda Divisional HQ

Contracts have been signed for the construction a new Garda Divisional Headquarters, opposite Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology in Murrough, and work is expected to begin shortly.

J Rhatigan & Company has been awarded the contract for the development of the regional base. The news has been welcomed by Fine Gael Galway West TD Brian Walsh, who said the addition of a new HQ would be "a positive development for the east of the city and the broader western region", and create employment during the construction phase.

Dep Walsh also pointed out that, despite concerns from some quarters earlier this year, the new HQ will be additional to, and will not be replacing either the Mill Street and/or Salthill Garda Stations. "Mill Street and Salthill will be retained and will remain integral to the policing network following the completion of the new HQ,” he said.

The Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald, is expected to visit the new HQ along with Garda Commissioner Noreen O'Sullivan in the coming months.
