New GMIT students’ union executive takes office

Kilconly native Michael Kerrigan has been elected students’ union president of Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology. Mr Kerrigan will take up the role following a year as deputy president and the union’s first Deputy President for Education, having also completed a year as vice president for welfare.

Mr Kerrigan is a GMIT graduate of business. The SU president is the chief executive officer and principal spokesperson for the Students' Union, and he represents the students of GMIT on all of the major decision making bodies within the institute. "The experience of working in the students' union for the past two years will give me a great head start in this role," Mr Kerrigan said. "I am honoured that the students of GMIT have placed their trust in me once more and I look forward to working on their behalf along with my new team.”

For the 2015-16 academic year, Mr Kerrigan will be joined by Mark O’Brien, who has been elected to the position of deputy president for education, and Amy Kelly, who was re-elected to the position of vice president for welfare. Mr O’Brien is a native of Castlepollard, Westmeath, and a graduate of the College of Tourism and Arts. Ms Kelly is from Kildare, is a GMIT graduate in gnó agus cumarsáid, and is looking forward to her second term as welfare officer.

The students’ union is a democratic organisation whose function is to represent the needs of its members across all five GMIT campuses. The new executive officially took up office on June 1.
