Some, but not all councillors, get top marks for attendance

Six out of the 15 Galway city councillors have received top marks for attendance at council meetings for 2008, but others have fared less well in figures released this week.

Meetings of the Galway City Council are held at least once a month, although extra meetings can be required to cover notices of motions, special debates, and for getting thorough material that was deferred or backlogs.

In 2008, 20 city council meetings took place. Of those, eight had a full attendance of all 15 councillors. The lowest attendance was 10 out of 15 members.

Six councillors attended all 20 meetings of 2008: Green Cllr Niall Ó Brolcháin, Labour councillors Billy Cameron and Tom Costello, Fine Gael Cllr Padraig Conneely, and Independent councillors Catherine Connolly and Terry O’Flaherty.

According to figures from City Hall, three councillors attended 95 per cent of the meetings: Independent Cllr Daniel Callanan, Labour Cllr Colette Connolly, and Fianna Fáil Cllr Mary Leahy.

Three councillors made it to 90 per cent of the meetings: Fianna Fáil Cllr John Connolly, Independent Cllr Donal Lyons, and Fine Gael Cllr Brian Walsh. Two councillors had an attendance record of 85 per cent: Fianna Fáil Cllr Michael J Crowe and Independent Cllr Declan McDonnell.

The councillor with the lowest attendance record for 2008 was Fine Gael Cllr John Mulholland with a 65 per cent rating.
