Comedian Terry Alderton to play Róisín Dubh

TERRY ALDERTON, the astonishingly original British comedian with seemingly multiple personalities, and an off-beat brain that unleashed lets loose comedy gold every time, is coming back to Galway.

Terry Alderton will play the Róisín Dubh on Friday June 5 at 8.30pm as part of his current British and Irish tour. Terry’s comedy combines using an array of voices and characters, where they are in competition with each other, and often, with Terry himself - think of it as a solo singer managing to sing three part harmony by themselves.

The inspiration for this approach came from the realisation, following a 2005 show at the Manchester Comedy Store, that he was “turning out the same old same old just like so many others”.

“I decided on the long drive home that I needed to reinvent myself,” says Terry. “In the old show I had been doing I had a routine about not being understood by people of the USA with a broad London accent. The routine had me saying to the barman in a New York bar ‘Could I have a medium white wine?’ He replied ‘We only do the one size!’

“I would act as if I were leaving the bar, then turn my back on the audience and talk in two different voices: one telling me I should go back and the other suggesting the same but show some of that bulldog spirit. This would get a laugh but on looking back, it was a laugh that I wasn’t used to. These ‘voices’ now told various truths about the show, the gig, my material, the audience. The great thing about this whole device for me is, I’m still often unsure how to use it and that makes for moments of magic, danger, discomfort.”

Terry has played the Melbourne Australia Comedy Festival, the New Zealand Comedy Festival, the Edinburgh Comedy Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe, and the Vodafone Comedy Carnival Galway. He has also won numerous awards, including The 3 Weeks Critics Award and New Zealand Comedy Festival Best International Act. He also played Bianca's boyfriend Terry in Eastenders.

Also on the bill are The Lords of Strut, featuring Sean-tastic and Famous Seamus, who combine comedic theatrics with dance and acrobatics to make incredibly funny and original sketches. Eile Magazine said of them, “If Michael Flatley and Jim Carey had a sado-masochistic love child they would be it”, while The Irish Times promised “an hour of belly laughs”.
