Work to start on €7.1-million Claregalway Flood Relief Scheme

Minister Howlin to give go ahead 'in the coming weeks'

Work is set to begin on the €7.1-million Claregalway Flood Relief Scheme as the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin, is due to sign off on a review of environmental assessments.

Construction of the drainage scheme was delayed last year as a result of new regulations that required a full review of Environmental Impact Assessments to be carried out by the Office of Public Works. That review has now been completed and is expected to be formally approved by Minister Howlin. No date has been given yet for when exactly this will take place, alothough it is due to be fone "in the coming weeks". The work will begin soon after and be carried out by the OPW.

“This is a hugely important project for the people of Claregalway who vividly remember the devastation and destruction that was caused by flooding there in 2009,” said Fine Gael Galway West TD Brian Walsh. “The flood-relief scheme represents a substantial investment in the area, which will ensure those circumstances are never repeated again.”
