Galway WFC round off year with victory over neighbours

A 53rd-minute goal from Lynsey McKey was enough for hosts Galway WFC to see off Castlebar Celtic in their final game of the Continental Tyres WNL on Sunday in Eamonn Deacy Park.

An opening half saw some chances, but both defences where dominant. However an injury to an assistant referee after 30 minutes caused a lengthy delay in play, and after the game restarted, neither side could find the net before the break.

Galway manager Don O’Riordan made a double substitution for the second half, and in the telling move of the game, a through ball to one of these substitutes, Alana Moran, saw her lay off to the unmarked McKey to fire home from outside the box.

Celtic pressed for an equaliser with Shauna Jackson coming close on a number of occasions, while at the other end Lisa Casserly came close to doubling GWFC’s lead when she unleashed a thunderous shot which the keeper gathered at a second attempt.

In the end Galway were able to hang on for a deserved victory to complete their second season in the national league.

Galway WFC will hold its annual general meeting on Monday April 27 at 7.30pm in Eamonn Deacy Park. All those with an interest in women’s football in the county are invited to attend.
