Sean-nós singing in Pennsylvania

UNLIKELY AS it might seem, for a time, Pennsylvania was a hot-bed of sean nós singing, as a public lecture at the Galway City Library will show.

Dr Deirdre Ní Chonghaile will give a talk entitled Sean-nós song in Pennsylvania, 1884-1935: the Rev. Daniel J. Murphy Collection on Tuesday at 6.30pm. The Rev Murphy (1858-1935 ) from the Ox Mountains in Sligo, together with JJ Lyons of Glenamaddy, collected more than 1,000 Irish language songs in Philadelphia and the surrounding coal-mining towns during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Dr Ní Chonghaile, a writer and broadcaster from the Aran Islands, will explore this in her talk.

The talk is part of the NUI Galway organised Martin Reilly lecture series, named after the celebrated Galway uilleann piper. All are welcome.
