NUI Galway took the blue riband event at the Galway Head of the River 2015 on Saturday, in a successful day for local clubs.

Not only did the college men’s senior eights retained the title, but the NUIG women’s eights were also top of the podium.

St Joseph’s won the men’s junior 18 eight and four titles, while Colaiste Iognaid had wins in the men’s junior 16 eight and four, and women’s junior 18 pair events

The more experienced members of the Galway rowing community were also successful, with Galway winning the men’s masters four, and Tribesmen winning the women’s masters eight and men’s masters sculls.

A total of 248 crews from all corners of Ireland, representing 31 different rowing clubs, took to the Corrib on Saturday in ideal conditions.

Sponsored by Boston Scientific, and jointly hosted by NUIG Boat Club and Tribesmen Rowing Club, the Galway Head of the River produced a fantastic day’s racing for 15-year-old scullers up to the masters eights - which boasted a combined experience of more than 500 years.

While local clubs scored notable wins, the visitors did not leave empty handed, with UCC taking the men’s senior four title that had resided in Galway for over 10 years, and the mens and women’s single scull titles won by St Michael’s (Limerick ) and UCC respectively.
