Senator Higgins said: “I am delighted to be able

to help mark International Women’s Day in Galway this year. The women of the Galway deserve to be celebrated and I am very much looking forward to hearing from the wonderful panel of speakers lined up to for the day. These local women are leading lights from the worlds of business, farming, academia, sport and the charity sector.

“They will be Dr Micheline Sheehy Skeffington - academic and equality campaigner, Teresa Killeen-Kelly - women's rights campaigner and community development worker, Maura Canning - Chairperson of the IFA National Social and Family Affairs Committee, Siobhan Carroll - founder of ACT for Meningitis, Cliona Standun - business woman and President of Network Galway, Aoife Lane - Chairperson of the newly formed Women's Gaelic Players Association and academic.

“Women’s lives have changed dramatically since International Women’s Day was first celebrated back in the 1900s. However, much work remains to be done to achieve gender equality in all aspects of life in Ireland and around the world. That is why International Women’s Day has become such a significant global event, drawing our attention to the great gains made by women and the vital work that remains to be done.

“I would like to extend a very warm welcome to women around Galway to come and join us in the Harbour Hotel from 12pm to 2pm on Saturday March 7 for a cup of tea, a chat and to reflect on the great contribution women have made, and continue to make to life, in our region, our country and beyond. Hopefully, we will all be leaving the event energised for the months ahead,” she said.
