Officials appointed to ‘help speed up’ social housing delivery in Galway

The appointment of two senior local authority staff to Galway County Council and one to Galway City Council will “assist greatly in the delivery and roll-out of social housing”.

This is the view of Labour Galway West TD Derek Nolan, who was reacting to the appointment of the officials by the Environment Minister Alan Kelly.

The new staff will deal specifically with the roll-out and implementation the Government’s €3.8 billion national social housing strategy, as it affects Galway. This means both councils will be in a position to appoint architects, planners, engineers, surveyors, housing officers, and additional clerical staff to develop social housing in the city and county.

“I have worked very closely with Minster Kelly in recent months to highlight the gravity of the housing crisis in Galway and the need for this strategy to be implemented as quickly as possible,” said Dep Nolan. “It is crucial that both councils continue to work closely with Minister Kelly and his department to ensure that these positions are filled in a timely manner
