Best newcomer award rounds off a remarkable year for reinvented Shannon

Shannon Airport has rounded off a remarkable year on a high after being among the award winners at the InBUSINESS Editor’s Choice Awards in Association with Chambers Ireland.

The airport, in its second year as an independent entity, won the ‘Best Newcomer’ title at the third annual awards ceremony, which was held in Dublin. The awards recognise and honour exceptional business achievement and innovation in Ireland and winners are selected based on growth, profile of business, range of services and customer care.

Shannon’s selection comes at the end of is best ever year yet in terms of awards. In September it landed its most significant industry award ever when it won the overall Airport Achievement Award for 2014/2015 from the European Regions Airline Association (ERA ).

Days earlier it won the most prestigious international marketing accolade for airports under four million passengers at the World Routes Awards in Chicago and in June it won the Airport Achievement Award at the inaugural Irish Aviation Industry Awards.

Shannon CEO Neil Pakey said that this latest award caps a great year for Shannon. “We’ve had a really strong year on so many fronts, not least with the continued growth of passenger numbers at Shannon and the finalisation of the Shannon Group. We’ve got a lot of recognition for this through international and national awards and the InBUSINESS Editor’s Choice crowns it off nicely at year end.

“InBUSINESS is backed by Chambers Ireland, which is Ireland's largest business organisation, so that adds further validation to this award and our success this year. It’s been a fantastic team effort by all at Shannon and we look forward to 2015 and more of the same,” he said.

Last year, in just its first year as an independent entity, Shannon managed to halt five successive years of passenger numbers decline and significant losses by breaking even and marginally growing passenger numbers. The airport is set for double digit growth in 2014 on the back of securing a range of new routes, particularly across its European network.
