Jurys Inn announces fundraiser for Olympian and local Galway man

Jurys Inn Galway will hold a fundraiser on Saturday December 20 for Galway man and Special Olympian Martin Diskin who is currently being treated in University Hospital Galway following a serious road accident.

The event will raise funds to help pay for adaptations to his home so that he can live independently when he leaves hospital.

Mr Diskin has been left with serious injuries as a result of the accident and is currently undergoing extensive rehabilitation to learn how walk again; however he will face a host of new challenges when he returns home. Injuries to his neck, spine and legs have meant that his home will have to be adapted to make it wheelchair accessible.

Mr Naughton is an accomplished footballer and prior to his injury won a gold medal at the 2014 Special Olympics European Summer Games in Belgium. He is also a keen cyclist and was known to cycle 50km around Galway city and into Connemara every weekend.

On top of his sporting achievements, Martin is a longstanding employee at Jurys Inn Galway, having worked at the hotel for eight years.

In an effort to support Martin and his family during this difficult time, Jurys Inn Galway will host a fundraiser at the hotel on Saturday December 20 from 11am-4pm where, with the help of Martin’s local football club, Salthill-Devon F.C., many of the hotel’s employees will cycle 500km on exercise bikes on the steps of the hotel.

With plenty of Christmas cheer and a bit of competitive spirit on display, all are welcome to come down to the hotel, root for the volunteers and donate to a very worthwhile cause.

If you would like to donate to the 500km Cycle for Martin, or just can’t make it down to Quay Street on the day, you can make a contribution, all are welcome
