Galway WFC must get back to basics ahead of Raheny clash

Galway WFC are away for the fourth weekend in a row when they travel to Morton Stadium in Dublin to take on Raheny United on Sunday at 2pm.

In another tough encounter, Galway will face the current Continental Tyres Women’s National League champions who will be anxious to get back to winning ways after their defeat to Bristol Academy in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Galway enter the game on the back of a disappointing 5-1 defeat to Wexford Youths last weekend, and manager Don O’Riordan says it does not get any easier this week.

“ It appeared that we didn't have the desire. We now need to go back to basics and reiterate the plans and ideas we worked on in preseason.

“We came out of the lion’s den, but are going into the fire next week. We know league leaders Raheny United will be looking to bounce back from their Champions League exploits, so we must show the pride and passion that we did not show in Wexford. We need to stand up and be counted next week.”

Although the crushing defeat at the hands of Wexford Youths in Ferrycarrig Park on Sunday did not reflect fairly on the game, Wexford were more clinical, making the most of their chances.

The hosts made the perfect start with Claire O’Riordan claiming her first of the afternoon after just seven minutes.

However Kara Mullins headed home Galway’s equaliser on 26 minutes, only for O’Riordan to restore the Wexford side’s advantage from the restart. O’Riordan secured her hat-trick within 35 minutes, leaving the score line 3-1 at the break.

The scoreline worsened for GWFC immediately after the restart when a defensive error left it open for Kylie Murphy to make it four .

Although Galway continued to battle, Aisling Frawley bagged Wexford’s fifth just before the hour mark to leave Galway with an impossible mountain to climb.
