Councillors are expected to give approval to the Macnas Halloween parade, which takes place on Sunday October 26, when they meet in City Hall this afternoon at 4pm.

At today’s city council meeting, councillors must vote to give permission for the parade to go ahead under Part XVI of the Planning and Development Act 2000-2009. The parade is organised by Macnas, in association with the Galway City Council, and is unlikely to meet with any opposition.

The parade, Symphony for the Restless, will celebrate Samhain, the Celtic festival to mark the end of the harvest season and the coming winter solstice. It begins at 4.45pm in the Fisheries Field, before passing through the city streets, and finishing at the Claddagh Church.

Macnas is inviting the public not only to attend the parade, but also to dress up in costume and enjoy the spectacle of priests and madmen “summoning the slumbering descent of countless agitations as they close the night upon the city like a trap door” as well as a festive air of “disobedience, smoke, fire, music, monsters, giants, and boundless energy”.
