Gardaí issue burglary warning ahead of dark winter evenings

Gardaí are advising householders to take precautions to protect their homes from burglars in advance of the darker evenings of winter, a time of year which traditionally sees an increase in break-ins.

A Garda spokesperson said this week that, while many burglaries occur during the day while the occupants of a house are out at work, the onset of short winter evenings also sees a rise in the numbers of homes broken into under cover of darkness.

Though there are seasonal fluctuations burglaries remain a year-round problem, with several houses in Galway city and county broken into in the last fortnight. Among these was a home in Grange East, Turloughmore, which was burgled at some time between 8.30am and 3.30pm on Tuesday September 23. A Compaq laptop and several pieces of jewellery were among the items stolen from the house. Anyone with information is asked to contact Loughgeorge Garda Station at 091 798122.

A house at New Line, Athenry, was raided between 11.30am and 4pm on Wednesday September 24. In this instance a sum of money was stolen from the house. Anyone with information is asked to contact Athenry Garda Station at 091 844016.

On Friday September 26, a home in Oranbeg, Oranmore, was targeted. The burglar(s ) made off with several items including a gold and white gold bracelet, a silver watch, a black XBox console, and a black iPad. Anyone with information is asked to call Oranmore Garda Station at 091 388030.

In Galway city, a house at The Green, College Road, was burgled at the weekend. This incident occurred at some time between 7.30pm on Saturday September 27 and midnight on Sunday September 28, and a grey Audi A3, registration 08 G 401, was stolen from the driveway.
