Croi talk will be ‘wake-up call’ for women

Local heart specialist, Dr Yvonne Smyth will give a free public talk in the Croí Heart and Stroke Centre on Thursday October 1 at 7.30pm specifically aimed at local women. The talk entitled Women and Heart Disease is being organised by local heart and stroke charity Croí to raise awareness among women of the fact that heart disease is not just a man’s disease.

Announcing details of the event, Croí’s lead prevention nurse specialist Irene Gibson says this may be something of a wake-up call for women of all ages.

“There is huge awareness and fear of breast cancer among women, but it may come as a surprise to many that women are seven times more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than breast cancer and in fact, one in every two women will die from heart disease or stroke.”

“On a positive note however the good news is that up to 90 per cent of heart disease and stroke is preventable through lifestyle change and risk factor management,” she said.

Galway women of all ages are invited to attend this free event where they will learn about the warning signs and symptoms of heart disease and how these can sometimes be very different from those experienced by men.

Places for this public talk are limited so pre-booking is essential.
