Maigh Cuilinn girls claim All Ireland honours

Maigh Cuilinn girls secured the All Ireland crown at the Kilmurray u-16 sevens championships at the weekend.

The Maigh Cuilinn girls topped the competition in which 27 teams from 16 counties competed.

Wins over Ballymacarbery from Waterford, Mallow, and Achill ensured Maigh Cuilinn topped their group before overcoming St Brigid’s from Limerick in the qualifying round.

In Quilty, Maigh Cuilinn progressed to the semi-final after a victory over Shannon Gaels from Roscommon in the quarter final to face local Galway rivals Corofin in the semi-final.

This local derby saw Maigh Cuilinn ahead 3-2 to 0-6 points at half time, and despite continuing pressure from Corofin, the Maigh Cuilinn squad ran out comfortable winners 7-4 to 1-9.

Up against hosts Kilmurry Ibrickane in the final, Maigh Cuilinn gave 100 per cent effort to grab a lead at the break by 5-4 to 1-4. And with support from Corofin, Maigh Cuilinn scored three fast goals at the start of the second half to put the game out of Kilmurry Ibrickane’s reach, as they run out 8-6 to 2-6 winners.

Maigh Cuilinn, coached by Paraic Davoren, finished the tournament having played seven games, scored 55 goals and 38 points, and conceded just 11 goals and 33 points.
