Discover local history research at Coole

Coole Park will host a course on local history publications over the coming weeks as part of the Coole Spring Culture and Heritage Programme.

The course, which begins on Monday, will provide participants with an introduction to local history and how go about producing a local history publication. Speakers include both local and national experts in their fields, all having an in-depth knowledge of their subject. This local history publications course is intended to present best practice in the production of a local history publication for both individuals and community groups.

This course has been organised by the Friends of Coole in partnership with County Galway Heritage Forum, Galway County Council, the Heritage Council, and the NPWS, and is an action of the Galway County Heritage Plan 2004-2008.

The lecture series will begin on Monday with a talk by Miriam Moffitt, lecturer in local history studies at NUI Maynooth, entitled What is local history? The lecture will take place in Coole Visitors’ Centre from 8pm to 10pm.

On Monday January 26 Maureen Moran, executive librarian at Galway County Library, and Patria McWalter, archivist with Galway County Council, will discuss researching local history and the sources available at Galway County Library.

Monday February 2 will see a talk on research and the sources available at the National University of Ireland library, as well as copyright requirements, delivered by Kieran Hoare, archivist in the special collections room at the James Hardiman Library in NUI, Galway.

On Monday February 9 Dr Gregory O’Connor of the National Archives of Ireland will discuss research and the sources available at the National Archives.

The series will continue until Monday March 9 and will include a number of field trips to libraries and the National Archives.
