Galway writer's play to be staged in New York

Seamus Scanlon's The McGowan Trilogy in New York Irish Theatre Festival

THE MCGOWAN Trilogy, a series of one-act plays by the award-winning Galway writer Seamus Scanlon will be performed as part of New York’s Annual Festival of Irish Theatre.

The trilogy of plays centre on the character of Irish revolutionary Victor McGowan, a contradictory man who is “cold blooded, warm-hearted, and conflicted”.

The first play, Dancing At Lunacy sees McGowan ignore court martial protocol; The Long Wet Grass sees McGowan having to choose between his commitment to the cause and his childhood sweetheart; in Boys Swam Before Me, McGowan faces painful revelations from his past. The show is presented by Origin Theatre Company and directed by Kira Simring.

Scanlon, who is from Renmore and who divides his time between Galway and the US, is the author of the critically acclaimed short story collection As Close As You’ll Ever Be (2012 ). He has also written a number of plays and his work has also featured in Noir by Noir West (Arlen House, 2014 ) as well as in The Irish Times.

The McGowan Trilogy runs from September 11 to October 5 at the cell (338 West 23rd Street ). For more information see www.thecelltheatre.org
