Rooney family continues to sponsor jockey championship

THE whole county will soon go horseracing mad again and once again the Rooney family of Galway will sponsor the prize for the most winners at the Galway event.

The family-run business will provide the prize for Ballybrit’s leading jockeys both on the flat and over jumps in this month’s world-famous races.

Pat Smullen and Ruby Walsh are no strangers to this prize, which Rooney’s has sponsored for 40 years.

Offaly-born Smullen has made the flat title his own for seven seasons now, while Kildare man Ruby Walsh added last year’s National Hunt prize to his wins from 2006, 2008 and 2009.

Both of this year’s winners will be decided on the highest number of wins over the seven days of racing.

The winning jockey is presented with €2,000 and a bespoke Galway Crystal trophy at the prizegiving on the final day of Race Week, which starts on July 28.

Niall Rooney advises ladies to get ready to grab their hats and gentlemen to don those suits for a great week of racing and excitement.

“We are so pleased to be presenting this prize with which our family business have been involved for four decades now.”
