Sparkplug rides again

LITTLE JOHN NEE romps into the Town Hall Theatre next week for an extended run with his much-acclaimed show Sparkplug Callaghan.

Sparkplug Callaghan is a travelling bluesman and vintage mechanic living in his dead uncle’s barn and struggling to make ends meet. Joe Duffy is on the radio and the banks are putting people on the side of the road, but across the meadow he sees a vision - his boat has come in.

An adventure into the heart of a surreal rural landscape that combines lyrical comic storytelling with original music and songs (played on a variety of intriguing instruments, creating the soundscape which won The Irish Times Best Sound Designer Award ), the show received rave reviews at the Dublin Fringe. RTÉ Radio Drama subsequently adapted it for wireless and this version won a prize at the prestigious Prix Italia 2013.

Little John is currently theatre artist in residence at the Town Hall. He has recorded a new album of his theatre songs with The Caledonia Highly Strung Orchestra, to be released this summer.

The show has been greeted with great critical praise, to quote writer Michael Harding from The Irish Times: “A mesmerising piece of theatre balanced somewhere between the stories of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and a Zen meditation session. The evening made me feel as if I was a child again, enthralled by a magical story.”

Lavish praise and richly deserved so get thee hence readers and see for yourselves! Town Hall studio from Monday June 16 to Saturday 28 at 8.30pm. Tickets are available from the Town Hall on 091 - 569777 and
